How to Play Family Feud

Representatives from two families make up the contestants. Each team is allowed five members. These contestants are asked questions that were previously posed to a survey panel of 100 people who provided the most popular answers (sometimes, the surveyed audience might be narrowed down to just include all women or all men).

A contestants answer is considered correct only if it is one of the concealed answers unveiled on the game board, or the judges consider it to be equivalent to one of the answers. The contestant earns one point per surveyed person for each answer that matches what's on the game board. As the game progresses the points they can earn are doubled and then tripled.

At least two of the 100 surveyed people must have given the same answer for an that answer to appear on the board. A question has to receive at least four different answers. A few good examples of questions might be "Name something you find out about someone on a first date"or "Living or dead, name a famous Ted".

The contestants are asked questions about what other people think is true not about what actually is true. You can give a perfectly reasonable answer but it will be considered incorrect because it failed to make the survey (e.g.: for the question about famous Ted's , Ted Danson is a famous actor, but if at least two people did not give his name then the answer is incorrect).

Whichever player gives the most popular answer on the board to the question causes their team to gain control. That team then has the option to either play the question or pass it to the other family. A team can automatically gain control if they give the number one answer listed on the board. If both players receive the same amount of points for their answer then the person that buzzed in first wins control.

Each round of of play starts with two opposing family members facing off to gain control of the board. It is typically a tradition for the contestants to be cordial and greet each other with a handshake when coming to the podium for the 1st time and before the question is read.

The host of the show would then start with the next family member in line, each being allowed to give one answer to the question. Family members may not allowed to help one another while in control of the board. A "strike" is given for each answer that is not on the board or if a person fails to respond. Although there is no time limit, if time is short and a contestant seems to be stalling, then the host has the discretion to impose a three-second count. If they do not answer the question before the 2 seconds is up they will receive a strike. After a family receives three strikes they have to relinquish control of the board to the opposing family. The other family can now confer with one another as to what answer they want to give as they have only one chance to correctly guess one of the remaining answers. The team caption will typically pick one of the answers they came up with (or pick one of his own) and if it is on the board they are able to steal the points that were accumulated in the bank by the other family.

After a family is awarded the bank for a round, all remaining answers are then revealed. It is tradition for the audience to yell each unrevealed answer in a unison.

The first family to reach 300 points wins the game and goes on the the final round called Fast Money. For this round each family picks two family member to represent their team. One family member leaves the platform and is placed in an sound proof isolation booth, while the other gets 20 seconds to answer five questions. The host will ask the 1st question as as soon as he finishes reading it the clock begins to count down. The contestant can pass if they can not think up an answer right away. They can come back to a passed question if there is time remaining. A player can earn one point for each correct answer during this round. The host will usually reveal all unveiled answers with the phrase "(Our) Survey said!"

After all the points for the first player are added to the family's score, the second family member comes out of the isolation booth and back on stage where the first contestant's answers are covered. This family member is given 25 seconds to answer the same exact five questions. If this player gives the same answer as the first player did on a question then they will here a double buzzer sound and the host will ask then to give a different response. it's typical for the host to say "try again."

A team wins Fast Money by accumulating a total of 200 points either collectively or one person can do it on own their own if their answers alone add up to 200 points. If a team scores less than 200 points, the points they did accumulate are multiplied by $5 and the family is awarded that amount. The current prize for winning Fast Money is $20,000. If a family is lucky enough to remain on the show as five-time champs (winning the show five days in a row) also receive a new car.

Strategy for Playing Family Feud

A family's strategy should be to have their team made up of people who are quick thinkers and who are well versed when it comes to popular culture. Another strategy is to practice the fast money round before the show and then pick the two family members that tend to to the best thereby giving your team a better chance of winning.
