River Texas Hold’em Strategy

In Texas Hold’em, the river is often times the most pivotal moment in any hand. All of the action in a hand leads up to the river, and it is the final opportunity for a player to make a move. Many pots are really built on the river, with raising and re raising being quite prevalent. Beyond this, the river is the most risky part of any hand. This is the time where you can make the most money, but it is also the time where you stand to potentially lose the most money. After the round of betting is completed, it is now time for showdown, and the pot is then shipped to the winning player. Of course, a pot could also be chopped up amongst a few players, but this does not happen too frequently. So, knowing what you know now, what is the optimal strategy for river play?

Be Cautious or Be Bold

If you want your hand to get to showdown, there is little to no reason to make any wildly aggressive plays on the river. That is to say, when your hand is marginal at best, don’t force yourself into throwing money away. Try and get to showdown for as little money as possible. Now, if you have a hand that is likely the best in play, you should be trying to squeeze some money out of your opponent’s stack. The strength of your hand in relation to the likely strength of your opponent’s hand will determine just how much you should be betting. For example, if you have quads, and you think your opponent has a big full house, a big bet is in order. If, on the other hand, you have two pair, but your opponent is likely only holding one pair, a smaller bet makes much more sense. Your bet should correspond with the maximum amount that you can realistically earn, not the amount that makes sense for your hand and your hand alone. In poker, particularly when placing bets, all things are relative.
