History of Spades

Spades was created in the 1930s. It didn't gain much attention until the 1940s during World War II. Soldiers fighting in the war created the game, likely as a way to pass the time and think of something other than the stresses of warfare out on the field. It became extremely popular amongst families and friends, and was a party game staple.

How to Play Spades

Spades requires two or more players and the best way to play is with 4 players. When four players are involved the partnership version is much more effective and balanced. Spades uses a standard deck, which consists of 52 cards. If there are additional players, over 6, then another deck will be added to the game.
Since the game is called Spades, you can guess that the Spades have a higher value and are extremely important to winning the game. Before the players start they bet how many tricks they will win. This is before seeing your cards. You can bet a minimum of 1 trick to be won. Most of the time an average of 3 is recommended for good players. You can also do a blind bet, and try to avoid winning any tricks.

Spades are always the highest ranking card no matter what number is on the card. If there is a 4 hearts, a 8 of clubs, and a 6 of diamonds, but you have a 2 of spades, then you will still win that trick. It is important to have as many spades as possible. However, if there are two spades in the trick then the one with the highest value will take the trick.

Points are gained by taking tricks to meet your bid that you place. If you bet you will win 2 tricks, then you take 3, you have a high chance of winning. But if you win too many tricks then you are at risk for losing points. 500 points and beyond is considered an excellent round.

To start the game the dealer is chosen by who has the highest card. Then the game works to the left around the group. Four players in the group should have 13 cards each and they are dealt face down, never glancing at the cards in the deck. You don't have to arrange your cards but you can once you look at them.

After all is dealt, players begin by playing their first card. Spades cannot lead the trick until they have been broken. This means someone has to place a spades in order for the spade to be a lead card. After this is done, it is all fair game. The highest value card wins. If no spade is played, the highest card value wins. Clubs are the lowest rank, then diamonds, then hearts, then spades. A King of hearts will always trump anything that is not a spade.

There are several variations of Spades which can make playing complicated for beginners. Learning these variations takes time but many are popular in casinos such as Deuces High, Breaking Spades, and more. There are many different ways to play, this card game has some of the most diverse play styles of any other card game out there.

Strategy for Playing Spades

Playing like a pro will help you win big whether you play for money or just for the fun of it. Spades is not a huge strategy game the way Poker is, but having some strategy on your side will help you. Without any strategy at all you can end up losing more often than not, and that is simply no fun at all.

If you are the first person chosen to bid, then bid with some restraint. Choose 1-3 to be on the safe side. If you are chosen to bid last, and then watch what the others bid and place it somewhere around what their bid was. Bidding strategically is the best move you can make.

Since you need 500 points to win, you should work with your partner to get the right bid so you can hit 500 points and be the winner. There is rarely a tie.

When leading, do not lead with a king. Aces will always trump it and you will lose, while also wasting your King. Middle cards can be used if you are already going to lose. For example, if someone played a Spade you should play an 8, 9, or 10. There is no point in wasting your best cards.
