VGT Slot Machines (Hunt for Neptune's Gold Slots Online for Free)

I have friends who seem fascinated by the idea of playing VGT slot machines online. They seem especially interested in one of their slots in particular — Hunt for Neptune’s Gold. But that’s not VGT’s only slots game. Many of their other games are also popular, especially Hot Red Ruby, Lucky Ducky, and Mr. Moneybags.

But no VGT slot machines are available to play online. None of the VGT slots are available for free, either. VGT was acquired by Aristocrat Leisure, though, which makes some of its games available on the internet. So that may change soon.

I’ve never seen VGT slot machines in a gas station or convenience store, though. That doesn’t mean they aren’t sometimes there. But my guess is they’re too expensive for a gas station even in a jurisdiction where that’s allowed.

In this post, I examine VGT slot machines, who makes these machines, and why they’re such a popular casino commodity. I also look at their availability online, in both free and real money versions, as of 2023.

I’ve looked at all the other sites discussing VGT slot machines, and this post is the most comprehensive guide to VGT slots online.

What Are VGT Slot Machines?

VGT slot machines are bingo-based slot machine games designed and produced by a company named Video Gaming Technologies, Inc. The company specializes in creating Class II games for tribal casinos. The company has been in business since 1991 but was acquired by Aristocrat Leisure in 2014. The official website for VGT can be found here, and the official website for Aristocrat can be found here.

On their website, VGT mentions that they have over 20,000 games available in over 140 casinos in the United States. But I’d imagine that information is outdated, as they haven’t updated the website in what looks like years. Their products are clearly hugely popular in states like Minnesota with a lot of tribal casinos, though.

The big innovation that VGT brings to their games is the “red screen” feature, which is a free spins bonus. The most popular slots from the company offer these bonus screens.

The company does more than just design games like Hunt for Neptune’s Gold slots. They also manufacture these games and provide customer service to the casinos offering their games. The corporation also has a research and development team and a marketing team in place.

Their acquisition by Aristocrat is good news for fans of their games who’d like to see them offer their games on the internet. Aristocrat DOES offer some of their games online. I’m predicting that they’ll move the VGT games online eventually, too.

What Are Red Screen Slot Machines?

Red screen slot machines are a subset of VGT’s total number of offerings. Their distinguishing feature is the red screen bonus. It’s a randomly triggered bonus where you get a bunch of free spins. According to reports from my slot-machine-loving friends, the red screen bonus happens on about 20% of your winning spins.

A red screen bonus is simple, too — it’s just an extra number of up to 5 bonus spins. And all those bonus spins are guaranteed to be winning spins.

I should point out that this doesn’t mean you’ll trigger a red screen on 20% of your spins. You’ll only see a red screen bonus on a spin that already resulted in a win. I don’t know what the hit ratio is for VGT slot machines specifically. But between 20% and 35% is a common hit ratio.

Given that, you can infer that you’ll see a red screen bonus about once out of every 20 spins or so. If you’re an average slot machine player, you probably make 500 spins per hour, which means you’ll trigger the red screen bonus an average of 25 times an hour. Hitting a red screen bonus with a bunch of extra spins on average every couple of minutes explains the popularity of these games.

You’ll find no shortage of YouTube videos of gamblers recording their sessions playing red screen slot machines, in fact. You’ll also find the occasional would-be gambling guru explaining a strategy for winning at red screen slots from VGT.

Like most slot machine strategies, these red screen slot machine strategies involve bankroll management, loss limits, and win goals. Such strategies are harmless, but they’re not going to improve your probability of winning in the long run.

Hunt for Neptune’s Gold Is One of the Most Popular VGT Slot Machines

One of the most popular VGT slot machines in Oklahoma is Hunt for Neptune’s Gold. The game is not available online as I write this, although you can find countless YouTube videos in the search results for the game. It’s widely considered one of the best slot machine games you can play at Winstar Casino, too.

Most slot machine games revolve around a theme, and these themes seem to repeat themselves from one manufacturer and one casino to another. The idea of a mythological character with a pile of treasure is one of the most common of these themes.

Hunt for Neptune’s Gold from VGT falls firmly into this category. Neptune is the Roman god of the ocean.

Popular VGT Slot Machines: Hunt for Neptune's Gold

The game features 5 spinning reels and 20 paylines, and the denomination is optional. You can play for a penny per line per spin, but the denominations go up to a quarter in most locations. You might be able to find even higher denomination versions of Hunt for Neptune’s Gold — if so, please leave a comment in the comments section.

And, you can bet up to 200 coins per spin, so Hunt for Neptune’s Gold can be a high roller slot — especially somewhere like Oklahoma. 200 coins multiplied by 20 paylines at a quarter a spin is $100 per spin.

You don’t have to active all paylines on every spin, though, so you don’t have to be a high roller to enjoy Hunt for Neptune’s Gold.

The jackpot is 50,000 coins, so if you’re playing for a quarter, you can win $12,500+ on a winning spin.

But only if you get really lucky.

What’s it like to actually play the game?

As you might expect, the reel symbols consist of cartoonish takes on oceanic themes. The bar symbols are attached to anchors or are shot through with harpoons. The Neptune’s Gold symbol is the most important symbol in the game, though.

Other symbols include sharks, boats, and diamonds.

Lucky Ducky Is Another of the Most Popular VGT Slot Machines

Another of the most popular VGT slot machines in Oklahoma is Lucky Ducky. Like Hunt for Neptune’s Gold, Lucky Ducky isn’t available on the internet for free or real money.

If you’re playing in a tribal casino in Oklahoma, you’ll almost always find a bank of Lucky Ducky slot machines from VGT. This game is a mainstay there. It’s considered one of VGT’s signature games, in fact.

Lucky Ducky resembles an old-school mechanical slot machine. It has 3 reels and a single payline.

VGT Slot Machines Example 2: Lucky Ducky Slotrs

But it’s not, in fact, a mechanical slot machine game. The outcomes for Lucky Ducky are like the other outcomes for VGT slot machines. They’re determined by a random number generator that’s running an electronic bingo game across all the other machines in the network. If you look for it, you’ll see the bingo card on the front of the machine. The bingo numbers light up, and the reel symbols are just for show.

The jackpot on a Lucky Ducky slot machine is 10,000 coins, and the game is available in denominations ranging from a quarter per spin to $5 per spin.

Like many traditional-looking slot machine games, Lucky Ducky’s reel symbols harken back to the classics like bars (single, double, and triple) and 7s (in blue or red).

Lucky Ducky machines are also red screen bonus games, and they sometimes feature the “Bonus Blast” package in addition.

Mr. Moneybags Might Be the King of VGT Slot Machines

Mr. Moneybags reminds me of the board game Monopoly. It’s a 3-reel slot machine game, like Lucky Ducky, that looks like a throwback to traditional slot machine games. It’s been a big hit in tribal casinos ever since its release in 2001.

I’ve seen at least one other site call Mr. Moneybags the most popular VGT slot machine, but I suspect that information is outdated. Hunt for Neptune’s Gold seems more popular to me.

Nonetheless, Mr. Moneybags seems to be a perennial favorite. The original game has spawned multiple spinoffs and sequels with the same theme. The details below apply to the original game.

VGT Slot Machines #3 - Mr. Moneybags Slots

The original Mr. Moneybags game has a single payline and a 2500 coin jackpot. Your maximum bet is 3 coins, and the game is available in denominations ranging from a quarter a spin up to $25 per spin. The game also features the red screen bonus opportunity.

The Mr. Moneybags logo is the important symbol in the game, as it acts like a wild symbol.

The red cherry scatter symbols triggers the red screen bonuses.

Like Lucky Ducky, Mr. Moneybags features the usual classic slot machine symbols of bars and number 7s.

I saw a website try to analyze the odds of winning the jackpot based on the number of reel symbols. They assumed that each reel had 24 stops.

Calculating the probability is easy. It’s 1/24 X 1/24 X 1/24, or 1/13,824.

Here’s the problem with that line of thinking:

The outcomes aren’t determined by the reel symbols. Mr. Moneybags uses a random number generator to determine wins and winning amounts for the game. You can’t infer anything about the odds of winning from the number of symbols or the number of stops on the machine.

Hot Red Ruby Slot Machines from VGT

Hot Red Ruby is another slot machine hit from VGT, and it’s arguably as popular as the other games listed so far. These slot machines have a reputation for being some of the loosest slot machines at Choctaw Casino. Also, try not to confuse “Hot Red Ruby” with “Red Hot Ruby.” They are 2 different games.

Like all the games produced by VGT, these games work on a bingo technology to generate the results of the spinning reels. The big difference between how the random number generator works on these games is that they’re networked with the other slots. In Vegas casinos, slot machines have individual random number generators.

In Oklahoma, games like Hot Red Ruby are networked with other games in the casino and determine results based on an electronic bingo game. The results are still completely random, and the experience is seamless for the gambler.

You can play Hot Red Ruby for between 25 cents and $25 per spin. The jackpot is 2500 coins.

The reel symbols are more interesting than those found on some of the games in this list. The bar symbols are still there, but they’re joined by lipstick, martinis, and high-heeled shoes (red, of course).

As with most of the popular VGT slot machines, Hot Red Ruby offers the red screen bonus. Some of the games also offer additional bonus games, but that’s an option the casino can opt in and out of.

Hot Red Ruby slot machines are popular enough that you might have to wait a few minutes before you can get a seat in front of one.

What Other VGT Slot Machine Games Are Available?

So far, I’ve discussed the most popular VGT slot machines:

  • Hot Red Ruby
  • Hunt for Neptune’s Gold
  • Lucky Ducky
  • Mr. Moneybags

But those games just scratch the surface of the games that are available from VGT.

Here are some other titles to look for next time you visit an Oklahoma casino:

777 Bourbon Street, obviously, has a New Orleans theme. It’s popular.

Cameloot sounds like it might have something to do with camels, but no, it’s about King Arthur and his knights.

Celia Cruz: The Queen of Salsa is a fun game to play. I haven’t played all the games on this list, but I have played Celia Cruz, and I liked it.

Crazy Bill’s Gold Strike is the first red screen slot machine game I ever played, and I got lucky early. So Crazy Bill’s Gold Strike will always have a special place in my heart.

It’s Payback Time is another of VGT’s 3-reel old-school games.

King of Coin is VGT’s version of an Elvis slot machine.

Land of the Free Spins is a 5-reel slot machine game with 9 paylines. The jackpot is 392,000 coinss

Polar High Roller has an ice theme, but other than that, it’s a pretty standard slot machine experience.

Star Spangled Sevens is another VGT game I have direct experience with. Nothing special about the theme, but the hit frequency was excellent.

Super Hits Jackpots is a wide area progressive slot machine. It’s the closest thing VGT has to Megabucks.

This is just a sampling of the titles offered by VGT. Their library is extensive and includes quite a few games. The games range from traditional 3 reel games to progressive slots spanning over 75 titles.

The Secrets to VGT Slot Machines (How to Win)

You’ll find no shortage of people wanting to give you (or more likely, sell you) the secrets to VGT slot machines. Don’t bother with their advice. Most of it is just common sense. In fact, almost all slot machines strategy advice involves 3 things:

  1. Money management
  2. Win goals
  3. Loss limits

“Money management” refers to how you manage your gambling bankroll. The win goals and loss limits I’m about to explain are aspects of a money management strategy. But the first rule of money management is to set aside a bankroll for your gambling activities.

But you don’t just set aside money for your hobby as a whole. You divide that into multiple smaller bankrolls for each visit to the casino. And, if you’re planning multiple gambling sessions, you’ll have a bankroll for each session.

For example, if you have a bankroll of $200, and you’re going to the Riverwind Casino for 2 days, and you plan to have a morning and evening session each day, you might plan to have a $50 session bankroll.

How Win Goals and Loss Limits Work

Your win goal is the amount you want to win before quitting. You can have win goals for an entire trip, and you can also have win goals for each session. Having a win goal ensures that you sometimes quit while you’re ahead.

Your loss limit is the amount you’re willing to lose before quitting. When you’ve lost this amount, it’s a signal that it’s time to end your gambling session.

Win goals and loss limits are usually based on a percentage of your bankroll. You might have a win goal of 100% of your bankroll, or you might have a loss limit of 50% of your bankroll.

The most important thing to remember about these “secrets to VGT slot machines” is that they don’t work in the long run. You might win in a session, or you might lose, but your long-term results will almost surely result in net losses.

That’s because of the math behind the game. You can read my post about how to play slot machines for a living for a detailed explanation of why that never works.

Winning Tips for VGT Slot Machines

No amount of strategy and no winning tips can change the odds on VGT slot machines. As with all other slot machines, VGT slot machines have a built-in mathematical edge over the player. The difference between the payout odds and the odds of winning each prize is the reason the casinos are so profitable.

As far as I know, no one reports the payback percentages for VGT slot machines. You can find a lot of data on payback percentages for various slot machines in Vegas and other locations. But you won’t find that information for Oklahoma, which is where most of the VGT slots are located.

Even then, you don’t know the payback percentage by manufacturer. The data that sites like American Casino Guide offer is incomplete, and it’s not their fault. It’s limited by the reporting that the state requires from the casinos.

So, what kind of tips can someone offer you to improve your results on these games?

Not many.

My best advice to the would-be winning VGT slots player is to have a firm win goal in mind and cash in when (and if) you hit it. The lower your win goal, the likelier you are to achieve it.

Also, never play ANY slot machines with money you can’t afford to lose. The odds of losing your money are better than the odds of winning money. This applies to VGT slots just as much as it applies to slot machines from the bigger manufacturers.

You can reduce the amount of your mathematically expected loss by playing less. This might mean slowing down and taking fewer spins per hour. It might also mean spending fewer hours in front of the machines.

I have friends who claim they win as often as they lose at the casino, but I don’t believe them. Statistically speaking, only about 20% of the gamblers at a casino go home with any winnings. You might be able to improve on that a little bit by having strict money management in place.

But no amount of advice, strategies, tips, or tricks will turn you into a slot machine winner — on VGT slots or any other slot machine games.

Conclusion

No games in Oklahoma casinos are more popular than the VGT slot machines. They’re probably the most popular games in many tribal casinos throughout the country. But I try to limit my remarks to the casinos with which I’m personally familiar.

Sadly, there are no free, online VGT slots games. You can’t play a free online Hunt for Neptune’s Gold game, for example. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that any of the casinos listed on this page offer games with similar themes that you CAN play for free or real money. If you don’t want to risk any real money, just choose “practice mode.”

This paragraph is incorrect. Its 50.00. Other than this, enjoyed the article.
And, you can bet up to 200 coins per spin, so Hunt for Neptune’s Gold can be a high roller slot — especially somewhere like Oklahoma. 200 coins multiplied by 20 paylines at a quarter a spin is $100 per spin.
